It has been demonstrated that gynecologic cancer survival rates are higher at oncological reference centres and patients are better treated by centralized care in high-volume hospitals, by high-volume physicians, thanks to specialized training. The Division of Gynecologic Oncology of the IEO European Institute of Oncology has been a reference centre in Italy for ovarian cancer management for more than 15 years, with over 100 new cases per year and 350 surgeries.

This is the reason why ESAGON was founded in 2010. It is a programme that provides advanced post-graduate training to improve the survival of cancer patients with enhanced surgical and multidisciplinary approaches.
