• Clinical Activities

  Director of the Division of Medical Senology to lead the area of medical treatment of Breast Cancer at the EIO, creating and conducting a structure for excellence in patient care. The area of Medical Senology is aimed to provide comprehensive care of all the types and phases (preoperative, adjuvant, advanced disease) of breast cancer with active clinical and translational research, integrating outpatient and in-patient areas through a common support. Ten Physicians are currently involved in care and research at the Division of Medical Senology.

  During the past 3 years a significant increase in the number of Patients followed in the Day Hospital (from 2918 in 2011 to 4840 in the first eleven months of 2013) as well as in the out-patient clinic was registered (from 3593 in 2011 to 5209 in the first eleven months of 2013). He is in charge for the care of the patients treated within the in-patient clinic (8 patients per week). He is the Director of the weekly multidisciplinary meeting on early breast cancer where approximately 50-60 patients are discussed every week. During the first 11 months of 2013 he planned the medical adjuvant treatment of 2314 patients. 

   

• Research Activities

  Assessment of factors, which are associated with response or resistance to therapy, and exploration of new therapies according to baseline prognostic features are considered as a priority in the development of the best multi-modal strategy including sequence of local and systemic treatments. Research studies are conducted to define the value of new high-throughput technologies in assessing the level of risk and likelihood of response to specific therapies, in order to improve our knowledge and lead to better tailoring of therapies. Such an approach brings clinical research closer to the individual patient.

  Research activities are dedicated also to the definition of new predictive and prognostic features of breast tumors as well as specific aspects of the disease such as special histological types, inflammatory breast cancer and very young patients.

  In light of these principles, he is conducting tailored clinical trials in the preoperative setting, dedicated to different subtypes of breast cancer (luminal A, luminal B, triple negative and HER2 positive). Several clinical trials on metronomic chemotherapy for the treatment of breast cancer are carried out in the preoperative, adjuvant and metastatic settings. Large cooperative trials focusing on endocrine therapy of premenopausal patients, extended endocrine therapies in postmenopausal patients and maintenance therapy in endocrine non responsive breast cancer are ongoing at the IEO under the umbrella of the International Breast Cancer Study Group (IBCSG). 

   

• Educational Activities

  He is member of the Executive Committee of IEO Education since 2012. The structure is responsible for all the training activities of the Institute, combining into a single reality the internal and external training, in order to enhance the knowledge of IEO and to provide the best educational opportunities.

  During 2013, he participated as invited speaker to 9 meetings, including 1 International and 8 National conferences.

  In July 2013, he conducted training meetings at the Department of Biostatistics and Computational Biology, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA, USA.

  He is responsible for the weekly IEO multidisciplinary conferences focusing on adjuvant treatment, preoperative therapies and advanced disease treatment.
